Due to work changes Louise and Rod who have support the team over the last few years have moved on and can no longer support the programme. Thank you both for your hard work and the support you have given the programme. The teams will miss you both and we all wish you the best in the future.

Talking Prostate

Since April the team has taken on Prostate cancer in addition to the other three cancers which they talk about. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the team has found at stalls and events men are really interested in knowing more about this cancer. A big big thank you goes to our new prostate cancer star “Norman” who has kindly agreed to be the face of the prostate leaflet. Our message wouldn’t be as powerful as it is without the support of people like Norman behind us.

Bigger and bigger

Since the start of 2011 the teams have been busy promoting cancer all over Stoke on Trent. New volunteers have also joined in to help us to spread the message. The team has now spoken to over 8,000 people ,which is fantastic. The teams have also highlighted key places in Stoke onTrent where they would like to target first which include factories, shopping centres and markets. Well done team – keep up the excellent work you do!

Cancer volunteers from Stoke-on-Trent needed!

The cancer awareness programme needs more volunteers to help promote the importance of early diagnosis.

We would also love to hear from anyone who has had prostate cancer and would like to feature in our new leaflets and posters to encourage other men to get checked out.

Rolling out success

The successful results of the recent evaluation means the cancer awareness programme is going City wide as from January 2011. The teams will also take on Prostate cancer which is the 4th most common cancer in Stoke-on-Trent.

Christmas meal and quiz

To end a busy year the team decided to meet up for a Christmas meal. It was great to get everyone together and Rod designed a fantastic Christmas quiz, which Sheila and Chris won. Thank you to everyone for all the hard work you have put in over 2010. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to what we can achieve together in 2012.

Celebration event

In December a celebration event was held to share and acknowledge the work of everyone who has been involved in the HCC programme over the last two years. Several team members shared their experiences as cancer awareness volunteers. Dr Iqbal from the PCT presented them with an award for the way in which they have got the cancer message out their local communities.

Evaluation Results are a success

The results of the external evaluation carried out to look at the impact the programme has had on cancer awareness have shown the programme has made a difference. One of the biggest achievements was how many people remembered coming into contact with one of the teams over the last two year. Cakes and coffee

The Longton team supported a local Macmillan coffee morning in Fenton. Whilst coffee and cakes were being eaten the team handed out information on cancer and how to spot the early signs.

End of HCC programme evaluation

After two years of hard work the programme is currently evaluating the impact of the programme on cancer awareness in the three ward areas.

The evaluation will look at the cancer awareness knowledge in the three wards areas and how the programme has been received. The community teams and steering group have also been asked to feedback their thoughts on the programme.
