Two become One

The Norton and Bradeley team and the Burslem team have decided to come together to form one larger team.  As the team meet so close to each other they have agreed to join up to share ideas, events and laughter!

A week of work for Sam

2nd June – 8th June

Sam, a volunteer for the Burslem team, has spent the last week on work placement at NHS Stoke on Trent. We went to see Lee Findler at the hospital and talked about the Bowel Cancer screening programme and Jane Kirby at the Breast Cancer Screening clinic. Sam also helped to chair the Norton and Bradeley team meeting. “Its been a great opportunity working with Jill and helping to organise events and also meet the other volunteers. I’ve really enjoyed my time and I have gained some great experience. Thanks Jill!”

Longton Carnival

6th June – Longton Carnival

A big thanks to everyone who came to help out at the Longton carnival. We spoke to over 300 people altogether, including the 48 that Lynne and Margaret spoke to at their church meeting that morning. That’s fantastic!!!

It was a lovely day until towards the end when the rain came down, and when everyone started to come in the tent for shelter we used this as an opportunity to hand out our leaflets.

It was a great day and once again thank you everyone for your support.

PHAB freewheelers

3rd June

Sheila and Sam from the Burslem team went to PHAB freewheelers at Burslem day centre. The PHAB freewheelers is an organisation for people, some of whom are physically disabled and some are not and provides opportunities for people to share in social activities. They managed to speak to around 50 people, not bad for an hours work!

DHL

The Longton team spoke to 100 workers at DHL last week during lunch time.  The team spilt up to ensure both canteens got covered. Lynn even walked across the site to the smoking shelter to tell them about the early signs of cancer.

5,000 and counting…….

Congratulations to the teams who have spoken to over 5,000 people since the programme started. Thank you for all your hard work. The teams will be celebrating at the next team meeting with a slice of chocolate cake!

Team talks in Tesco and Aldi

The Longton team had a busy morning in Tesco Longton in April talking to over 200 people in a couple of hours.  Sheila and Margaret spent most of the time talking to all the people they knew in the store.  Margaret even gave out advice on which iron was the best to buy to a lady who just could decide!. A big thanks to Tesco Longton for welcoming us to their store.

The Norton team spent a Friday morning in Aldi.  Roy, Deborah and June spoke to over 180 people in the store over a morning and nearly ran out of leaflets. Aldi made the teams feel very welcome and thanks go to them and all the volunteers who gave up their time.

Kate joins cancer team

Kate Edwards who is a Senior Health Improvement Specialist in Mental Health, Employability and Substance Misuse will be supporting the cancer awareness team following the departure of Helen last month. Kate is hoping to get out and meet the teams over the next few weeks. We are delighted to welcome Kate and her expertise to the team and hope she enjoys working with us on the programme.

Strictly talking cancer

The Longton team attended a tea dance on Monday at the town hall to talk cancer awareness with the dancers. The team was made very welcome and everyone seemed happy to talk to us.  Afterwards Stewart even got to go on the dance floor to show off his moves.

Team wins award

Congratulations to the HCC teams for winning the “getting your message across” NHS Stoke on Trent award on Tuesday night.  The teams have been doing such a fantastic job spreading the cancer awareness message in Stoke on Trent and they really deserve this award. Well done to everyone involved and keep up the good work!
