Cancer volunteers from Stoke-on-Trent needed!

The cancer awareness programme needs more volunteers to help promote the importance of early diagnosis.

We would also love to hear from anyone who has had prostate cancer and would like to feature in our new leaflets and posters to encourage other men to get checked out.

If you would like to volunteer please contact Jill on 01782 298064 or jill.davies@stoke.nhs.uk

Rolling out success

The successful results of the recent evaluation means the cancer awareness programme is going City wide as from January 2011. The teams will also take on Prostate cancer which is the 4th most common cancer in Stoke-on-Trent.

Christmas meal and quiz

To end a busy year the team decided to meet up for a Christmas meal. It was great to get everyone together and Rod designed a fantastic Christmas quiz, which Sheila and Chris won. Thank you to everyone for all the hard work you have put in over 2010. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to what we can achieve together in 2012.

Celebration event

In December a celebration event was held to share and acknowledge the work of everyone who has been involved in the HCC programme over the last two years. Several team members shared their experiences as cancer awareness volunteers. Dr Iqbal from the PCT presented them with an award for the way in which they have got the cancer message out their local communities.

Evaluation Results are a success

The results of the external evaluation carried out to look at the impact the programme has had on cancer awareness have shown the programme has made a difference. One of the biggest achievements was how many people remembered coming into contact with one of the teams over the last two year. This goes to show how hard the team have worked and they should all be very proud on these results. If you would like a copy of the report please contact Jill on Jill.davies@stoke.nhs.uk.

Cakes and coffee

The Longton team supported a local Macmillan coffee morning in Fenton. Whilst coffee and cakes were being eaten the team handed out information on cancer and how to spot the early signs.
